Nicola Scholl

Non-Profit Founder and Director at Play-Handball.org / Sport (for) Development and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) consultant and lecturer; special focus on handball

Nicola is a non-profit founder, an expert in the field of sports (for) development with a special focus on handball and a freelance consultant in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

She has been working as a freelancer in international development cooperation and development education for over a decade. Her expertise lies in sports - particularly handball. The former German Bundesliga player moved to South Africa in 2012 where she founded the non-profit organisation Play-Handball. Since then, she has expanded Play-Handball internationally, with operations now in South Africa, Kenya, and Germany. Nicola has worked in international development cooperation as a consultant and project manager with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and the German Development Cooperation (GIZ). Since 2023, she has lectured at Leuphana University, on ESD with sport.

Whether in her capacity as a founder, coach, lecturer, or project manager, Nicola is equally passionate about sharing her expertise. She is always looking for innovative and targeted solutions to contribute to sustainable societies through sport. To this end, she initiated the first handball and
education tournament series in South Africa, which uses sport to simultaneously create knowledge and enthusiasm for environmental protection. In 2022, she published the game collection 'Umwelt bewegen’ (Moving the Environment).
